A Double Dutch Company UK – How The RopeStylers Started, and Why

It started in 2010, when a friend took two of us to a Double Dutch competition in Paris. Neither of us had ever touched a rope. There have been four of us since 2015.

Since then the ropes have gone into a museum, a theatre, a basketball court, a fashion show, a festival field and a television studio. Each set is built for the room it is going into.

What we found out by putting people in the ropes

We went that way because it was the part we liked, and then we went looking for it.

We competed in all three. We also met the people who run those scenes, trained with the professional teams in Japan and Belgium.

And we build our own style from it : The Ropestyle.

The trick we kept using on ourselves was simple: put somebody who does not do Double Dutch in the middle and see what comes out. It is how dance and acrobatics ended up in the same routine, and how we kept opening the act to practices that had nothing to do with rope.

That is also what happens at an event. The ropes go down, somebody who has never jumped steps in, and the thing works on them the same way it worked on us.

A company that creates

Beyond live sets we build our own pieces: flaming ropes, LED routines, Double Dutch fused with urban and contemporary dance, and long-format work for a stage.

The same method is one anyone can pick up. The RopeStylers Academy teaches it online and in clubs, and trains people to run their own.

We put on the Street Jumper Battle for jumpers over sixteen, and we back Freely for those under fifteen.

What we saw at that first session near home is what we have been chasing since: young people grinning, older ones remembering, and everybody talking to each other by the end of it.

Two ropes and a rhythm is a very small thing to build on, and we have not come close to the end of what it can do.

Engaging us puts money into that, not only into an afternoon.
